How to Keep a Daily Milk and Newspaper Account at Home
Daily deliveries are small amounts that add up: a family taking 1.5 litres of milk a day at ₹68 spends over ₹3,000 a month on milk alone. Most households pay whatever the vendor's notebook says. A daily record takes ten seconds and ends the guesswork.
What to note every day
- Milk: litres delivered, plus any extra packets on festival days or when guests come
- Water cans: number received
- Newspaper: delivered or not
- Days away: mark them so you don't pay for deliveries you stopped
Do it at the same time every day, right after the delivery, when you remember exactly.
Working out the month-end bill
- Milk: total litres × rate per litre
- Water: cans × rate per can
- Newspaper: days delivered × daily rate (or the monthly charge if the vendor bills a fixed amount)
Add last month's unpaid balance, subtract any advance, and you have the amount to pay.
Settling without arguments
1. Ask the vendor for their count before paying.
2. Compare it with your record day by day if the numbers differ.
3. Most differences come from a missed holiday or an extra packet; agree on those quickly.
4. Pay by UPI where possible so there's a record.
When you travel
Tell vendors the dates you'll be away, note them, and check that those days aren't on the bill. For milk, ask them to pause deliveries a day before you leave.
Rate changes
Milk prices change a few times a year. Note the date of the change and use the new rate only from that day.
Share it with the family
If different people take the delivery on different days, keep the record on one shared phone sheet or one paper sheet in the kitchen. Everyone notes what they received, and nobody has to remember everything on the last day of the month.
Keep it simple
A paper sheet on the fridge works fine; a sheet on your phone adds the maths for you. Our Daily Milk, Newspaper & Water Can Account has the month's dates ready, works out each vendor's bill and shows what's left to pay. For a printable version, try our free Monthly Home Deliveries Tracker.
