How to Increase Typing Speed for SSC and Court Exams
Typing speed is a skill you build like fitness: small daily practice with the right form. Hurrying with the wrong fingers only makes the mistakes faster. Here is the method that works for exam candidates.
Step 1: fix your fingers before chasing speed
Put the left fingers on A S D F and the right fingers on J K L and the semicolon. Every key belongs to one finger. For the first two weeks, type slowly without looking at the keyboard. If you look down, cover your hands with a cloth. Speed in week one does not matter; correct fingers do.
Step 2: a 25-minute daily routine
- 5 minutes: home row and key drills in any typing tutor.
- 10 minutes: the 100 most common words, then short sentences.
- 10 minutes: one timed passage. Write down minutes, characters typed and mistakes.
Twenty-five minutes every day beats three hours once a week, because the fingers learn through repetition.
Step 3: work out your speed honestly
Gross WPM = characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. A word is counted as five characters including spaces. Net WPM subtracts mistakes using the exam's own rule. Exams also set a maximum error percentage. Read the official notice for your post; SSC, high courts, railways and state boards each publish their own rules for speed, time and errors.
Step 4: reduce mistakes
Read your typed passage against the original after every test and count mistakes by type: spaces, capitals, punctuation, spelling, skipped words. Pick the most common type and practise it for a week. Keep your eyes on the copy, not the screen.
Hindi typing
Find out from the notice whether the exam uses Inscript or Remington (Gail) / Krutidev, and which font. Practise only that layout. Learn the home row and the matras first, then half letters and conjuncts, then common words such as *और, के, में, है, की, से*.
Realistic targets
With daily practice, many learners go from 15 to 30 WPM in English in about six weeks, and reach 35 to 40 WPM in eight to ten weeks. Hindi usually takes longer. Your exam's required speed decides how far you need to go.
On the day
Warm up for five minutes, check the keyboard layout and font before the timer starts, and keep an even pace. Do not rush the first minute.
