How to File an RTI Application (Online and by Post), with Format

Updated 25 Oct 2026 · 2 min read

The Right to Information Act, 2005 lets any citizen ask a public authority for information. It is one of the most effective ways to move a stuck file.

What you can ask

Ask for facts and documents: the status of your application, file notings, names of officers handling it, rules and time limits. Don't ask for opinions or reasons.

How to file

  • Central government offices: online at rtionline.gov.in, with the ₹10 fee paid online
  • State offices: the state's RTI portal if available, or by post / in person to the Public Information Officer (PIO)
  • Fee: ₹10 for central public authorities (state fees vary); no fee for BPL card holders

Time limits

  • The PIO must reply within 30 days (48 hours if it concerns life or liberty)
  • No reply or not satisfied? File a first appeal within 30 days
  • Still not satisfied? A second appeal to the Information Commission within 90 days

Tips that work

  • Number your questions and keep them short
  • Ask for certified copies of documents
  • Keep proof of sending and the registration number

The Complaint & RTI Letters Pack has the RTI application and first appeal formats, plus letters for banks, insurers, electricity, telecom and online shopping.
